Wednesday Evangelism

Readers of this blog may not be aware of the evangelism I do. I discontinued regular Wednesday reports on the preaching and evangelism a while back but the mission goes on.

Today normal service was resumed after the summer break and it was one of those days I shan't forget. In fact, it's up there in the top three for eventful preaching days.

I wanted to get my board into action. On it I have an enlarged version of the good guy tract. I began asking people if they believed certain things were true: does reading in the dim light ruin your eyes, does eating at night make you fat etc.

A few people from the street contributed. After a half dozen Qs I explained that these are commonly held views but myths.

I then added a few more myths: religions cause wars (all the time), people are good, all religions are the same. I challenged these myths one by one and people stopped to listen. In fact, it wasn't long before a small crowd of about 20-30 had gathered.

A muslim challenged what I said, I I explained that simply as a matter of logic it was impossible to say all religions are the same. I gave the example of the different account of who Jesus is in the Quran and Bible. Logically they may both be wrong, but they couldn't both be right.

Time and energy do not permit me to narrate all that happened in the following three hours. Here is an incomplete list:

A group of muslims tried to drown out my voice when they didn't like what I had to say
scores of questions were asked by muslims and agnostics - I answered their objections and Qs
someone knocked my display board down
The city centre ambassadors had to stand near me for protection (they were superb!)
The police had to be called as some other muslims caused a disturbance
I continued to preach and scores of people heard the gospel of free grace through Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross for sinners
I was called a false teacher (because I denied the prophethood of Muhammad)
I was called a liar
I was 'playing on people's fears'
I was talking b*******. I was 'chatting s***'
I was told I was talking b******* (that's a different obscenity!)
I was rebuked by a (muslim) man for having pictures on my display board
I was accused of racism (yawn)
I was accused of stirring up divisions and not following the example of Christ who said love your neighbour

But I was bought three drinks of water by Christians
I was encouraged by fellow Christians who passed by and
I got a round of applause for saying I refuse to be cowed into silence (by the incriminatory tactics of a few muslims) - this same group cheered when a man blasphemed God and yet claimed to be muslims
I had reasonable and friendly discussions with the vast majority who weren't looking to be offended (including many muslims who listened)

Many heard the gospel, I don't know how many, but surely over a hundred came and went at various points. A couple want to come to church and who knows but that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation and the appointed means by which the Holy Spirit brings new birth.

May the Lord Jesus, for whom it is an honour to be falsely accused, get all the glory!
